...maar passie elk uur

Wie is er niet gefascineerd door vuur? Waarom zijn pyromanen vaak brandweermannen? Ga je ook naar de kerstboomverbranding na kerst of naar het vuurwerkfestival in San Sebastián?
Prometheus gaf het vuur aan ons mensen, maar we kunnen het, net als lucht, niet vasthouden. Zoals lucht ons ontglipt, zo is vuur te heet, te machtig. We kunnen het gebruiken om er iets mee te smelten, iets mee te verhitten, er een sigaretje mee te roken... maar er in wroeten zoals door aarde, of er in zwemmen zoals in water, het kan allemaal niet. Het blijft z'n eigen vurige gang gaan.

Blabla. Ik zoek eigenlijk alleen maar een excuus om deze link te plaatsen. Het zijn foto's van een expeditie van een stelletje waaghalzen wetenschappers naar de Nyiragongo-krater in Congo. Ze doen dat onder het mom van: we moeten metingen doen zodat we meer leren over vulkanen, etc., maar jij en ik weten dondersgoed dat ze gewoon geobsedeerd zijn door vuur en de gevaarlijke schoonheid ervan.

Foto 20 vind ik het indrukwekkendst, omdat je dan zo goed kan zien over wat voor afmetingen het hier gaat. En omdat het eng is. Staat die man daar wel veilig? Hoe snel stroomt die lava? Wikipedia zegt dat er een zeer lage concentratie silica in zit wat het sneller doet stromen dan de meeste andere lavastromen. Ik ben benieuwd of er ook video's gemaakt zijn waarop je dat kan zien.
De link naar de Kawah Ijen-expeditie met foto's van dezelfde fotograaf is trouwens ook de moeite waard, en herinnert aan de indrukwekkende documentaire 'War photographer' die ooit over James Nachtwey gemaakt werd.

In het nieuw

Ik had een nieuwe jas gekocht op de Noordermarkt, van paardenhaar en leren banen eroverheen, en bij de mouwen en kraag afgewerkt met bont. Erbij kocht ik bruine leren handschoenen en om het helemaal af te maken en in stijl te blijven kocht ik bij een tweedehandswinkel op het Waterlooplein een enorme donkerbruine bontmuts, die mij 15 centimeter langer doet lijken, en een grofgebreide superlange bruine sjaal.
Heel mooi allemaal, maar ik werd me ineens wel heel bewust van hoe ik eruit zag, en dat zelfbewustzijn confronteert me een beetje te veel met mijn ego, dat best groot is.

Het is dus telkens een Grote Beslissing om die jas plus bijbehorende accessoires tóch aan, om en op te doen waarbij ik steeds weer op mezelf inpraat: 'nou, en so what als mensen naar je kijken? Mensen kunnen moeilijk hun ogen dichtdoen.', 'In Rusland is een bontmuts volkomen normaal', 'Bovendien, wie zegt wat normaal is?' Etc. etc.

Fiets ik vandaag door de stad, komt een vrouw naast me fietsen: 'Mag ik je wat vragen? Waar heb je die schoenen gekocht?'

Zo zie je maar weer. Dan denk je dat je opvalt met het een, en dan trekt het ander juist de aandacht.

Voor wie het vertrouwen is verloren...

J.M.W. Scheltema

Ik weet niet of Scheltema's hospita Hongaars was en dat dat de reden was om pseudo-Hongaars op te voeren. De ietwat geëxalteerde toon heeft hoe dan ook iets zigeunerachtigs, en zigeuners zijn er wel te vinden in Hongarije.

Het neptaaltje deed me denken aan een Wikipedia-lemma over pseudo-Latijn dat ik van de week las, waar precies hetzelfde procédé werd toegepast: het ziet eruit als Latijn, maar als je het hardop leest, blijkt het fonetisch Nederlands te zijn. Ik moest vreselijk lachen om deze:  

Antonius Dominicus ad liveras pergis assure augurquis. Hyphrat seva sogus tosavus. Laputum ocus.

Toen ik overigens de dichter van 'Hosz pita' even googelde, kwam ik er hier achter dat deze op 26-jarige leeftijd is overleden toen hij studeerde in Leiden. Hij werd in zijn onderlijf geschoten tijdens een chaotische arrestatie vanwege ontoelaatbaar gedrag – hij was dronken.

Wie er ook vroeg bij was, met zowel dichten als doodgaan, was Jacques Perk, vooral bekend van het gedicht Iris. Op de middelbare school kregen we niet alleen dat gedicht te lezen maar ook deze:
